We are big believers in the power of field trips at Arco Iris Spanish Immersion School! There’s no better way for our K-5 students to learn and grow outside the classroom than by exploring the rich cultural, historical and natural treasures that Oregon offers. Each year, our students go on adventures that spark curiosity and create lasting memories with their classmates and teachers. Here’s a peek at some of the awesome destinations we visit!
For our youngest learners, a trip to the Oregon Zoo is always a big hit. Our students love getting up close with animals from around the globe. They even get to practice their language skills: leones, tigres y osos! We also sneak in a visit to a local pumpkin patch in the fall to experience the change in seasons, a hayride and the hunt for the perfect calabaza!
The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry is a favorite field trip for all ages. Their interactive exhibits tie in perfectly with our Oregon state science standards studies of physics, biology, and space. Students step out of the classroom and into hands-on displays with their classmates -- a memorable way to bring learning to life!
To further our social studies curriculum, Arco Iris upper grades visit the Aurora Colony, a living history site where students step back in time. They churn butter, explore pioneer life, and learn about Oregon’s past in a way that’s both fun and educational. History comes alive when our students visit the Oregon Historical Society, where exhibits on Oregon’s diverse past expand our studies. And a trip to the Holocaust Museum provides a meaningful opportunity for older students to reflect on history and build empathy.
Our students also enjoy cultural outings to the Oregon Children’s Theater for performances that inspire creativity and imagination. A trip to the Hoyt Arboretum offers our lower grades the chance to get up close and personal with towering trees and peaceful trails, connecting kids to the natural beauty of their Pacific Northwest home.
Last year, our students even toured Nike Headquarters, getting a behind-the-scenes look at innovation and design in a global company—an exciting glimpse into the modern world!
The best part of these field trips is that each one is free for all of our students. In a time when schools are crunched for funds, our small school is still able to prioritize experiential learning thanks, in no small part, to our incredible community that fundraises for us each year. Their hard work ensures that every student gets to explore all that Oregon has to offer.
